Categories and Tags Disappear in WordPress Self Hosted

There was time when the Categories and Tags on a WordPress-based blog that I manage myself (self hosted) disappeared. The front page blog displays “error 404 – Not found”, then when I logged into the administration page and click on “Writing – Edit” my posts are still there, just all the categories and tags that I have assigned to the article disappeared.

Other symptoms; when I added new categoriy and tag with the same name as the missing ones, there will appear a message that the category I added already exists and I can not add that particular category or tag, although it seems does not exist on the list.

The cause to the problem is very simple (although seems to be not related), do not worry this has nothing to do with your WordPress installation and you don’t need to reinstall WordPress or to restore the copy of database – something that I repeatedly do when it happens.

The problem is in the /tmp directory on the hosting server I use. It seems unrelated, but it’s the true cause.

The fix:

• If you have root access to the server, run the following command:
  df -h
  This command will display the status of free space on the server partition. Make sure / tmp 100% unused, and delete the files in it with this command:
  cd /tmp
  find . -exec rm {};
• Or if you have access to Cpanel, there is a link called “Service Status” on the sidebar (left bottom). Click it and check the /tmp partition. If it’s full, contact technical support of the webhosting service you are using, and ask them to empty /tmp.

I have proved this myself and indeed the problem is because the /tmp partition is full.

Oh yes, the last symptom I see was that the problem is intermittent. It can happend and disappear sometimes, this proves that it’s not a WordPress installation or database problem.

Update: Not all web webhosting Cpanel based service opens the feature to show this status. However you can still ask them to check it out for you and to order the evacuation of /tmp partition.

1. Too lazy to update your blog

Blog is identic with a site that periodically must have something new. If you have decided to make money with blog, then the first thing you must deeply consider is how to make your blog always have fresh content. You can do it either by yourself, or hire someone to write the content for you. It’s just about consistency and your persistence to take care of it. But please avoid unethical ways like simply copy & paste.

2. Don’t want to know anything about SEO

Whatever the reason, if you have a web site or blog, SEO remains an important thing for you to learn. Of course community (see 3rd point below) is also important, but SEO is the cheapest (while also most effective) way to search and attract candidate for your community. You may have hundred thousand dollars to put the campaign in newspapers or other media, but in term of community membership, conversion value of visitors that come from the campaign is less than they who come through the search engine. You don’t have to believe me, just prove it by yourself.

3. Don’t want to build a community

To build a community is necessary. Even it tends to be a must. If you are still thinking that a site or blog that most of the visitors based on community is less gaining than they who come from search engine then you must be brainwashed. Yeah… just think why.

4. Don’t want to try new things

Adsense is not the only way to gain money from blog. Open your eyes and believe the fact. If you feel Adsense don’ bring you luck, then stop and try new things. There are so many PPC’s other than Adsense. It could be local PPC that might be more suitable to your content. That, if you still want to deal with PPC thing. Have you ever thought about paid review, direct ads, etc? It’s your choice.

5. No Action Learn Only

Currently there’s so many information about internet businesses. Free, paid, and even pirated infos. The bright side is that you have many choices to learn from. The dark side is, too many information makes you hesitate to be a man of action. You just move back and forth, going nowhere.

Berdasarkan kalender editorial saya (oh… punya ya? ) tulisan ini seharusnya diposting pada minggu yang lalu, namun karena aktivitas pekerjaan utama yang belakangan ini sangat menyita waktu, membuat artikel ini baru bisa sedikit dipoles (agar layak dibaca) sekarang ini.
